Summer 2014 Offerings

 

The Department of Digital Learning sponsors Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses offered by Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) three times a year: fall, spring and summer.  Interested participants can view complete course descriptions and register using the BCPS online registration information.  Employees of BCPS are eligible to take any of the courses, as appropriate, free of charge.

ActivInspire and the Interactive Whiteboard - Level 1

1 MSDE Credit 11-12-02

 

Prerequisites:

  • Participants should be proficient in basic computer skills including downloading and saving files such as Word and image files and operating an internet browser.
  • Participants should have access to ActivInspire software.

This course is designed for participants who have limited or no experience with interactive whiteboard technologies and are interested in developing a basic understanding of the Promethean ActivInspire software. Participants will begin to apply skills/tools learned in ActivInspire to flipchart pages and will reflect on skills/tools which enhance student engagement.

ActivInspire and the Interactive Whiteboard - Level 2

Prerequisites:

  • Participants should have completed one of the following CPD courses: Using Interactive Whiteboard Technologies MSDE # 07-12-09 or ActivInspire and the Interactive Whiteboard - Level 1 MSDE #11-12-02
  • Participants should have access to ActivInspire software.

This course is designed for participants who have had some experience with interactive whiteboard technologies through the completion of the 1 credit CPD course, Using Interactive Whiteboard Technologies. Participants will develop strategies to engage students and differentiate instruction by learning additional features of the Promethean ActivInspire software. Participants will begin to develop flipcharts that meet content standards and enhance student interactivity.

Online Teaching in Maryland

Online This is an online course with a mandatory face to face session  and optional synchronous "Help Sessions" via Blackboard Collaborate.  Participants must complete and submit all assignments by the end of the course to receive CPD credit.

Prerequisites:

  • Daily access to the Internet.
  • Participants should have experience taking an online course.
  • Participants should be able to work independently, read directions, and view tutorials that they can then apply to their own work.

This course prepares K-12 teachers and professional staff to teach and facilitate online learning for both students and professional development courses. It provides a learning experience in the teaching and facilitation of pre-developed and facilitator ready fully-online courses. It provides a foundation in methods, skills, processes and best practices for teaching and facilitating a completely online course. This course assumes that the following content is present in a facilitator-ready course: instructional content, discussion prompts, and assessments. The course does not cover the design (other than general theory) of materials, the creation of assessments, or the use of course content with face-to face students.

Microsoft Office 2013 Overview

1 MSDE credit 10-21-07R 


This course will allow novice computer users an opportunity to explore Windows 8.1 and learn to apply three of the Microsoft Office Suite software programs. The course will begin with an overview of the Windows 8.1 interface. Subsequent sessions will focus on introducing the learner to Microsoft Word. Topics will include creating a document, understanding the ribbon options, and editing and saving documents. Participants will also be introduced to Excel and practice using the spreadsheet program with emphasis on inputting text and labels, formatting cells, and creating simple formulas. Finally, the focus will shift to PowerPoint. Participants will learn how to create simple PowerPoint presentations by changing slide layouts, inputting information, editing text, and adding graphics.

  • understand the fundamental changes that the Read/Write Web is bringing about in all areas including business, politics, and journalism.
  • learn about some of the tools of the Read/Write Web such as RSS feeds, social bookmarking, blogs, wikis, and podcasts.
  • create their own blogs and wikis for personal and/or professional use.
  • locate resources for downloading and creating educational podcasts and streaming videos.
  • create accounts for storing, organizing, and retrieving web-based information using RSS feeds and social bookmarking tools.

Using Interactive Whiteboard Technologies - Mimio

Prerequisites:

  • Participants should be proficient in basic computer skills including downloading and saving files such as Word and image files and operating an internet browser.
  • Participants should have access to MimioStudio software.

Classroom, special area, and resource teachers will acquire the ability to select and use MimioStudio interactive teaching tools to promote rigorous instruction. Learning experiences will include large-and small-group instruction, content-based brainstorming sessions, demonstration of Mimio equipment, and practice in creating interactive activities using MimioStudio software. Activities will focus on how to use MimioStudio to engage students in critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and communication in order to meet Goal 1 of the Blueprint for Progress.
